Sankalan is the annual technical fest of Department of Computer Science, University of Delhi. Started in the year 2005, Sankalan hosts a wide variety of events ranging from coding competitions and technical paper presentation, to extempore challenges and LAN gaming. Each year the events at Sankalan have a central theme and this year (2013) that theme was “Robotics”. The introduction of this theme gave rise to a new event- roBOLT, the robot hurdle racing competition, which was hosted this year at Sankalan, for the first time in the 8 year history of the fest, with our help.
Seven teams from six colleges participated at the event: Avengers from HMR Institute of Technology& Management; Driven Nuts from Bhagwan Mahaveer Institute Of Engineering & Technology; Elite from Ajay Kumar Garg Engineering College; Fear Busters from Millennium Institute of Technology; Mad Tech-ers from Uttar Pradesh Technical University; NOS from HMR Institute of Technology& Management; Zeus from Delhi Technological University. Out of these, Avengers, Driven Nuts, NOS and Zeus qualified for the Main Round.
Different tracks with varied hurdles were given to the participants, which each robot had to clear. The prelim round had hurdles like right angled turns, speed bump, 15-20 degree inclined surfaces, steps, valleys, alternating speed bumps, curved surface while the main round had steps, several downward inclined surfaces, several upward inclined surfaces, sandy terrains, speed breaker, alternating speed bumps, and a curved surface. The prelims required a robot to go from start to finish line in the minimum time possible by clearing every checkpoint, while in the main round the robot was required to take two laps of a portion of the circuit before heading to the finish line.
